Salsa Rapido: Presence in Salsa (the essential concept of ‘here and now’) 2019
Many salsa errors and issues come from a lack of presence including Anticipation. Presence (Here and Now) means giving your full attention to this moment, to the current task and to your immediate surroundings. What prevents presence are the distractions which divert your attention away.
Presence in Salsa
Hello, my names Alastair and here’s my Salsa Rapido tools tips and concepts to help you learn salsa faster, better and have more fun.
Presence is a useful concept in salsa because many of the errors and issues that hold us back come from a lack of presence. By improving presence we prevent many problems from happening.
It’s also the way to finding greater satisfaction in your dancing through rapport and flow, in other words less errors and more amazing dances.
Presence means giving your full attention to this moment, to the current task and to your immediate surroundings. What prevents presence are the numerous distractions which divert your attention away.
It’s often referred to as the Here and Now. Here is being right Here and not over there with some distraction on the other side of the room, or up in the clouds of your imagination, and the Now is being not in the future or the past.
Most problems relate to presence:
Anticipation is where the follower is in the future predicting what’s about to happen.
A leader will often be so distracted about what he’s about to lead that he makes errors in the Now. Again a future problem.
Past errors are where the internal criticism of what just happened affects the Now. Often you’ll hear a ‘sorry’ or ‘we’ll just try that again’ None of which are relevant to the Now as they’re comments on something that’s already passed so let it go, move on.
Distractions from the people around you are often unavoidable as evolution has made us constantly aware of threats, be it lions and tigers or just someone walking across the dance floor. We need a spACial awareness but our attention must be focused on the Here and Now.
It’s so easy to not be fully present, for our minds to wander up into the clouds. It’s very pleasant dancing in that relaxed, easy comfort zone, but is it getting the best out of the dance? Does it give you the thrill that makes you want more?
Only by dancing at the edge of our comfort zone do we grow our skill, and find that energy and excitement. To find our edge, we need to be the best we can be and that need the attention that comes from presence.
In the clip ‘Improving Presence’ I’ll show three way to avoid distractions and find more presence.
